Random musings on happenings in my kitchen and my life, in Durham, NC

About me
Hi! I'm Lindsey.

I'm a health educator, like to run at a slow, but steady pace, teach group fitness classes, and do my best to keep up with my family that's spread across the country. In the midst all of that, playing in the kitchen is one of my favorite stress relievers and creative outlets, so this blog chronicles some of my favorite cooking and baking adventures, but in the process it also tells the story of the rest of my life.

Like many people in the Triangle area, I'm a transplant. After spending the first 21 years of my life in the midwest, I've been settled in North Carolina for seven years. One of the things I love most about the area is the diversity of local farms, farmers' markets, and great food, so I follow lots of local food happenings, but I also keep up with my fair share of Midwestern favorites.

If you like what you find here, feel free to drop me a note and email Yummy things. I'd love to hear from all of you out there!

As my sister marks her first day as an Oregon resident (far, far away from Durham!), I’ve been thinking a lot about the value of online connections.

Kelsey at a lookout tower over the Pendleton Valley in Oregon

I know I don’t manage to post to this blog as frequently as I used to, and yes, sometimes being on Google Reader and Facebook and now Twitter (yep, I finally did it - you can find me @tarheelLindsey) can be a major time suck.  However, with all the twists and turns that life takes you through, I find I’m double grateful to have a variety of ways to keep in touch with folks and share the adventures we’re all in the midst of day to day.

Whitney, looking quite polished in front of a wall of graffiti

Online, I can keep up with Kelsey’s cross-country trek and Whitney’s plans for her own clothing store in LA.   We can share photos on Flickr and use Skype to share Hazel’s most recent tricks with her grandparents.

Me and Hazel, at her first pool party

Navigating our new roles with Hazel, it’s been wonderful to connect with old friends and cousins who are also navigating working and parenting and blogging too.  It opens up a whole new level of sharing common challenges and joys that we’d never get to if you relied on (infrequent) chances to catch up in person.

Our lucky chance to meet Miss Campbell Adair - since then she’s grown to be twice as old

Even when things get (really) tough, it’s amazing the community that can come together online.  A week ago, it was impressive the number of people who made peanut butter pies for Mikey when food blogger Jennie Perrillo asked people to do that one thing, in remembrance of her husband, who passed away suddenly, and in honor of all those special to us.  Similarly, we have been so glad to be able to follow the progress that our dear friend Ashley is making as she recovers from a stroke, through postings on her CaringBridge page.

Visiting with Ashley in Boston

So, although we’re always wishing that face to face visits were longer and more frequent, to everyone who reads this, thanks for doing so.  Also, thanks for all the Facebook likes, Flickr favorites, Twitter retweets, GChat messages, etc.  It’s nice to know your friends are out there in the World WIDE Web.

Lots of love to go around.  XOXOX
