About me
Hi! I'm Lindsey.

I'm a health educator, like to run at a slow, but steady pace, teach group fitness classes, and do my best to keep up with my family that's spread across the country. In the midst all of that, playing in the kitchen is one of my favorite stress relievers and creative outlets, so this blog chronicles some of my favorite cooking and baking adventures, but in the process it also tells the story of the rest of my life.

Like many people in the Triangle area, I'm a transplant. After spending the first 21 years of my life in the midwest, I've been settled in North Carolina for seven years. One of the things I love most about the area is the diversity of local farms, farmers' markets, and great food, so I follow lots of local food happenings, but I also keep up with my fair share of Midwestern favorites.

If you like what you find here, feel free to drop me a note and email Yummy things. I'd love to hear from all of you out there!

Hazel eats!

Since November, this blog has either been about adventures with Hazel or what’s happening in the kitchen.  Now we’ve finally reached the point that it can be about both!

We gave Hazel her first food - rice cereal mixed with breastmilk - during the last week of May.  After two weeks of getting her used to eating from a spoon and getting comfortable with progressively thicker stuff in her mouth, she got her first real food on Monday - sweet potatoes. I just roasted a couple in the oven while baking some zucchini bread over the weekend and then put them through the food mill.  I used the large holes for our mashed sweet potatoes and the smallest holes to puree Hazel’s.

She seemed to like them!

It’s actually pretty amazing how quickly she’s improved in her ability to eat from the spoon.  Most of the time, she opens right up for the spoon, and at least half the time she manages to gulp it down, rather than having it slide down the front of her face.  Of course, she’s already figured out how to blow bubbles in her “solid” food, which, although it’s messy, is pretty funny.

I think it won’t be long before she wants to feed herself!

Next up…summer squash and mango!
